미국의 팜 스프링스 농민시장과 영국의 바쓰 농민시장 비교 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 미국 팜 스프링스 농민시장과 영국 바쓰 농민시장 사례를 분석하고, 그 결과의 비교를 통해 공통점과 차이점을 도출해 내는 데 있다. 두 농민시장은 소재지 국가의 상이함에도 불구하고 차이점보다는 공통점이 많았다. 주요 공통점은 양질의 지역산 먹거리의 제공과 그에 따른 농민의 자부심, 슈퍼마켓보다 비싼 가격이지만 판매인과 소비자 모두로부터 인정받는 생산물, 판매인과 시장관리인들의 높은 직업만족도와 그 원천으로서 소비자와의 직접적인 교류, 농민시장의 지속적인 성장, 토요농민시장 등이었다. 이처럼 공통점이 많으면서도 팜 스프링스 농민시장이 판매인의 입장보다는 소비자에게 최상의 지역산 농산물을 제공하는 일에 관심이 더 많은 데 비해 바쓰 농민시장은 소비자보다는 판매인의 자립과 지속가능성에 좀 더 관심을 기울이는 경향이 있다는 점에서 차이를 보였다. 또 성수기 팜스프링스 농민시장의 주된 소비자가 추위를 피해 이주해 온 계절적 유동인구라는 사실은 바쓰 농민시장의 지역소비자 집단과는 다른 점이었다. 바쓰 농민시장과는 달리 팜 스프링스 농민시장에서는 저소득층의 농민시장 참여를 촉진하는 제도적 프로그램들이 운영되고 있다는 점에서도 두 시장 간에는 차이가 있었다. 팜 스프링스 농민시장과 바쓰 농민시장의 이러한 공통점과 차이점을 미국과 영국 농민시장의 일반적인 특징으로 확대 해석하는 것은 곤란하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이러한 사례 연구의 지속적인 시도와 성과의 축적은 양국의 농민시장에 내재된 특징들을 확인하고 이해하는 토대가 될 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 가치를 지닌다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to analyze both palm springs farmers’ market in the US and bath farmers’ market in the UK respectively and derive common features and difference from the results of the analyses. There were much more common features than difference in these two farmers’ markets, even thought they were located in different countries. Main common features were provision of high quality local food and farmers’ pride in it, a recognized produce from both vendors and clients notwithstanding its more expensive price than that sold at supermarkets, high job satisfaction of vendors and market managers and their direct interaction with consumers as its source, continued growth of farmers’ markets, and Saturday farmers’ market. I could find out that there was also difference between palm springs farmers’ market and bath farmers’ market together with many things in common. The former was more interested in providing consumers with best local agricultural products than vendors’ interest. In contrast, the latter was more interest in vendors’ financial independence and sustainability than consumers’ position. There was another difference between two farmers’ markets, too. Consumers at bath farmers’ market were local residents all year round, but main consumers during the peak season at palm springs farmers’ market were seasonal floating population who used to move away from other regions against the cold weather. Palm springs farmers’ market also had institutional programmes for promoting a participation of low-income residents at farmers’ market, whereas such programmes were not in bath farmers’ market. We should not stretch the meaning of common features and difference between palm springs farmers’ market and bath farmers’ market to general characteristics of American farmers’ markets and British farmers’ markets. Nevertheless, the continuous tries of these case studies and accumulation of the outcomes have an important value as a basis for identifying and understanding inherent characteristics in farmers’ markets of two countries.
