The major purpose of this study was to investigate whether ego-resilience and adjustment to school life can vary according to the parental attitude perceived by adolescent.
For this purpose, I divided my thesis into the following modules:
Firstly, does ego-resilience vary according to the parental attitude perceived by adolescent?
Secondly, does adjustment to school life vary according to the parental attitude perceived by adolescent?
The participants were 601 male and female students in all grades from 8 Middle Schools located in Daejeon city and Chungnam province, Korea.
The survey instruments were the Parental Authority Questionnaire(PAQ, Buri,1991) revised by Ji-Gun Kim and Ki-Hak Lee(2008) for evaluating the parental attitude, the Ego-Resilience Scale developed by Eun-Hee Park(1997) based on Block & Kremen(1996), and the School Adjustment Scale designed by Mi-Suk No(2003).
The data was analyzed with SPSS Win ver 12.0 at the significance level, P<.01.
The results of the study are as follows.
Firstly, categorizing parental attitudes into 3 groups - permissive, authoritarian, authoritative, the authoritative parental attitudes of parents occurred in the most frequency.
Secondly, in the result of studying the relation between parental attitude perceived by adolescents and ego-resilience and school adjustment by calculating the coefficient of correlation, there is meaningful static correlation between parental attitude and ego-resilience and school adjustment.
Thirdly, the stronger the authoritative parental attitude, the higher the score students got in the total score school adjustment as opposed to the more permissive or authoritarian.
Lastly, all the subordinate elements of adjustment to school life, except school rules, were affected positively more by authoritative parental attitude of parents than by permissive or authoritarian.
Since the authoritative parental attitude affects positively on ego-resilience and the school adjustment of a child, parents should assume more authoritative attitudes in their parenting.
Also, this study can show the basis of the needs to plan and practice education pre-parents and parents who have children in different stages, by district, as an educational policy to support the adolescents in adjusting to their school lives and to accommodate developing themselves towards a prospering society.
