There are several areas in the assessment of early childhood education and those are the followings: 1) curriculum assessment, 2) children assessment, 3) teacher assessment, 4) parent assessment, and 5) environment assessment. Among these areas, curriculum assessment is known as the most essential area in planning the appropriate curriculum and improving the teaching-learning process in order to make young children help their growth and development. This article presents various types of assessment models, assessment methods, and alternative assessment models such as performance assessment, authentic assessment, portfolio assessment, classroom assessment, and curriculum-embedded assessment. The article also describes the problems and issues confronting the assessment of early childhood curriculum. As one of the most appropriate devices in early childhood assessment, the portfolio assessment is mentioned. Because portfolio assessment is well known as not only appropriate model for current theories and trends in early childhood education, but also its emphasis of young children to construct their knowledge.
