A Study of Improving English Listening Ability by Learning English Pronunciation

    Jang, Hyun-Woo
    Department of English Education
    Graduate School of Education
    Kookmin University

It has been assumed that pronunciation teaching has been neglected in comparison with the other areas of English education. But for efficient communication, speakers should convey messages clearly, in order that listeners can have a clear understanding. So as to do that we need to pronounce words correctly. In this case, correct pronunciation doesn't mean native-like, but rather easily comprehensible to the average listener pronunciation.
Teaching how to pronounce is very importance thing. so we need to provide specific and systematic forms of pronunciation teaching focused on fluency rather than accuracy, and integrated into other areas of English. It should also be used in real communication situations.
This study is designed to investigate whether or not teaching
English pronunciation contributes towards acquiring better English
Listening skills in a classroom. In other words, the purpose of the
present study is to determine the necessity of teaching English
pronunciation for developing students' listening ability.
The result of the study indicates that the experimental teaching approach with using phonetics and phonology is more effective than the
traditional one in teaching and learning English in the classroom.
In teaching English, Teachers should be knowledgeable about the phonetics and phonology of English because (1) the sound system is primary and the basis for the spelling system; (2) they may have to teach English pronunciation to students who are not native speakers of English; (3) it is important to understand accents and language variation and to react appropriately to them
and to teach appropriate language attitudes about them to students (4) we are so literate that we tend to “hear” the sounds of our language through its spelling system, and phonetics/phonology provides a corrective to that; and (5) phonetics and phonology provide systematic and well-founded understandings of the sound patterns of English.
It suggests that further study in this field should be done in order to figure out more systematic and realistic materials and programmes that can be used in the classroom.
