다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This is a review of the book titled 「The Project of Linguistic Modernity」. 「The Project of Linguistic Modernity - Si-gyeong Ju and His Time」 traces how Si-gyeong Ju, the father of Korean grammar developed modernistic view of grammar. Ju``s idea of ``Korean Language`` is reflected in the process. The author avoids the common practice of analyzing Ju``s theory in the theoretical viewpoint used in modern studies of Korean language for there are subjects that cannot be analyzed by applying modern grammatical view to Ju. It therefore emphasizes the need for understanding and verifying his theory through his own works. The author creates a documentary film like effect by following the traces of the subject, Si-gyeong Ju, in social and historical context instead of using methods ordinarily used in Korean linguistic studies.
