Gastroschisis is a rare congenital defect in the anterior abdominal wall through which abdominal organs eviscerate.
Normal umbilical cord insertion, an extraumbilical location of the abdominal wall defect, and absence of a covering sac or its ruptured remnants serve to differentiate gastroschisis from a prenatally ruptured omphalocele. An infant born with gastroschisis should undergo urgent operation to place the exposed visceral mass within the abdominal cavity and to prevent further bacterial contamination, loss of body heat, and further congestion and edema in the herniated, and often nearly strangulated viscera.
Recently we have experienced a case of gastroschisis. The abdominal wall defect was repaired with full layer suture of abdominal wall by manual stretching of the anterolateral abdominal wall. He died of respiratory tract infection and sepsis in early postoperative period.
