The purpose of this study is to examine levels of academic achievement and the quality of life among students living in urban and rural areas and to examine the influence of residence, parental expectations of academic achievement, parentchild conflict and self-efficacy. To test and explore the differences between urban and rural samples, an empirical study was conducted with a total of 1,920 respondents (336 middle school students living in an urban area and 304 students living in a rural area) and their parents (672 living in an urban area and 608 living in a rural area) who completed a structured questionnaire developed by the first three authors which also included Bandura’s self-efficacy scale (Bandura, 1995). Those respondents living in urban and rural areas of six different provinces (Gyeonggi, Chungchung, Jeonla, Gyeongsang, Gangwon and Jeju) and also Seoul for the urban sample were selected. The results are as follows. The reliability of the scales varied from α=.79∼.87. Firstly, the parents of students living in urban areas had higher expectations of academic achievement than the parents of students living in rural areas. As for the issue of parent-child conflict, there were no significant differences between the two sample groups. Secondly, students living in urban areas had higher academic aspirations, higher levels of academic achievement grade and a higher overall quality of life than students living in rural areas. Thirdly, parental expectation of academic achievement, the students’ own academic aspirations and self-efficacy were predictive of higher academic grades. Residency influenced objective academic grades to some extent but it was not predictive of subjective achievement. Fourthly, parent-child conflict and low selfefficacy had a somewhat negative influence on the quality of life for all students. Self-efficacy had a positive influence and residency had a modest influence upon quality of life. The implications of these results, in terms of academic achievement and quality of life for students living in both urban and rural areas are also discussed.
