개발독재기 농민의 경제적 생존전략 다시보기: 자본주의-소농사회 접합의 일단(一端) = Rethinking the peasant`s economic strategy of survival under developmental dictatorship: a fragment of articulation between capitalism and small peasants` economy

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims at analyzing the survival strategies of a small peasant, who was struggling on the critical edge of subsistence under the developmental dictatorship in the 70-80s of Korea. Under the pressure from compulsory state and strengthening capitalism, small peasants were forced to depend on and adapt to them on the one hand, while counteracting and overcoming them on the other. In this paper, such a peasant-as-agent``s way of survival is examined at a concrete and microscopic level, based on one small peasant``s diary titled as Apo Diary documented at Apo-eup, Gimcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. As a result, in this paper, this economic strategy is elucidated as the characteristic phenomenon emerging at the stage of articulation between capitalism and small peasants`` economy. Also, it is treated as the outcome not only of consistent, national and structural factors but also of transient, local and individual momentum. The details of this research can be summarized as follows; ⑴ Small peasants`` traditional strategy which emphasizes thrift and saving had held out in a form of maximized imput of family labour into myriads of subsistence activities. ⑵ In spite of the advanced industrialization, norms of the traditional village community had endured, because observance of them would open economic opportunities to get more tenant farming. ⑶ The agricultural policy of the state was the main determinant in peasants`` survival. Surviving under the policy, peasants gradually realized its nature of suffocating peasants, but have shown a tendency to recall those years as economic success just because of the fact that they survived. ⑷ Diaries documented for long years under such conditions can be considered as both the result and the evidence of small peasants`` successful survival in their society.
