정신건강과 온라인을 통한 사회적지지 : 긍정적 혹은 부정적? 우울, PTSD, 온라인 대 오프라인 비공식적 사회적지지

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근에 페이스북 이용이 정신 건강 및 우울과 연관성이 있다는 연구들이 수행되어왔다. 본 연구는 세계에서 가장 온라인 접근성이 좋으며, 가장 심한 우울감을 호소하는 인구 집단 중 하나인 대한민국의 청년들을 대상으로 두 가지의 연구를 수행하였다. 첫 번째 연구는 300명의 피험자를 대상으로 한 관측데이터로, 주당 페이스북 사용시간이 많을수록, 소셜 네트워크를 이용한 소통시간의 비율이 높을수록, 면대면 의사소통의 비율이 줄어들수록 우울증상(K-CES-D)과 연관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 두 번째 연구는 2명씩 60팀의 피험자가 참여한 실험연구이며, 연구의 결과 가벼운 정신적 고통을 유도한 이후에 온라인으로 제공하는 사회적지지의 효과가 면대면으로 제공하는 사회적지지의 효과와 다르게 나타났다. 온라인상에서 높은 지지를 받았더라도, 피험자에게 미치는 긍정적인 효과는 현저히 더 낮았다. 대한민국의 대학생들 사이에서 나타나는 높은 우울증과 자살률은 ‘Examination hell’ 스트레스와 질 낮은 사회적 지지와 같은 특수한 상황의 결합으로 인해 부분적으로 설명될 수 있다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 대한민국 청년들의 정서문제에 대한 실천적, 정책적 제언을 모색하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recent research has linked use of Facebook to poorer affective well-being and depression. We conducted two studies with one of the most wired, and most depressed, populations on earth: South Korean youth. The first study (n = 300) used observational data and found that depressive symptoms (K-CES-D) were linked to more times on Facebook per week, greater percentage of overall communication via social network platforms, and decreasing percentage of face to face communication. The second study (n = 60) used an experimental approach and found the effect of online social support on mood after distress is different from the effect of face to face social support. The positive effect of the high support condition was significantly lower when provided online. We argue that high rates of depression and suicide among South Korean youth may be partially explained by a unique combination of high stress ‘examination hell’ and inferior quality social support.
