Abstract
Complex chemical reactions occur over time in the atmosphere including the formation
of sulphuric and nitric acids, leading to the deposition of acidic precipitation. Because
pollutants can be carried many hundreds of kilometers by winds, acid pollutants emitted
in one country may be deposited as acid precipitation in other countries. Acid deposition
has become an international problem. Natural sustainability against acidification of fresh
water has been exceeded in approximately 82,000㎢, or 25 percent of the area of
Norway. In Norway using lime is one of the most important methods to reduce
damages from acidification. Norwegian intranational goals are the reduction of
SO2-emissions to 76 percent of 1980 level before year 2000 and the reduction of
NOx-emissions to 70 percent of 1986 level before 1998. And Norway takes part in
international conventions and protocols and is as the leader at them.
