The dynamics of spindle and workpiece significantly affects the cutting condition and stability in milling process. The present paper investigates the dynamic nature of spindle-workpiece systems in the stability of milling process. In particular chatter characteristics due to the change of modal parameters and the presence of motion coupling are discussed. An eigenvalue problem approach to the stability of milling is extended to incorporate the coupling terms Three numerical examples are .provide for illustrating the chatter stability problems. The first two examples are devoted to parametric studies on the stability with modal parameters varied. The last example demonstrates a realistic problem concerned with coupling. The numerical study illustrates the relationship between chatter stability and modal parameters and coupling terms.
