The main purpose of this article is to examine the development of the relationship between Goguryo and Sun Wu through the Chanyu Name. Originally, the Chanyu Name was a name referring to the supreme leader of the Xiongnu. However, as the Xiongnu was subordinated to the Han Dynasty, the status of the Chanyu Name also changed. As its status declined, it was used anomalously according to the needs of various powers. In particular, in the Hou Han Dynasty, it was also used as a means of contacting the forces of foreigners.
Sun Quan, who became emperor in 229, actively sought to advance into the outside world in all directions. The background includes the declaration of the founding of the country, the strengthening of military power through securing manpower and supplies, and the establishment of independent understanding of the world. In particular, the Yu State was recognized as its territory through an alliance with Shu, and based on this, northern diplomacy was conducted. Sun Quan's intention to grant the Chanyu Name to King Dongcheon was also related to this.
King Dongcheon, who came to the throne in 227, was under political pressure from his stepmother, Wu. Among them, an envoy of Sun Wu from outside visited by chance, which became the beginning of a state-led transition. Through his name Wigung, he had already secured his relevance to King Taejo, and Chanyu, awarded by Sun Quan, further supplemented this.
However, the relationship between the two countries was broken due to limitations such as the fact that it was only a country-centered perception and that it was inevitable to be influenced by the harsh international situation. The exchange of the Chanyu Name between Goguryo and Sun Wu took place for the political purposes of King Dongcheon and Sun Quan, the supreme leader of the two powers.
