국문 초록 (Abstract)

자유주의와 공동체주의는 추구하는 가치와 덕목이 서로 다르며, 이에 따라 개인의 정체성이나 자아의 형성 과정, 국가의 중립성 문제, 옳음(정의)과 좋음(행복)의 관계 등에 대해서도 서로 다른 입장을 갖고 있다. 자유주의는 개인의 자유로운 권리와 자율성을 강조하면서 타인에게 피해를 주지 않는 한 개인에게 최대한의 자유가 보장되어야 한다고 주장한다. 또한 국가나 사회는 개인의 가치관이나 삶의 방식에 간섭해서는 안 된다고 본다. 그리고 옳음이 좋음에 우선한다고 주장하면서 보편적 도덕규범을 강조한다. 이에 비해 공동체주의는 공동체적 가치와 연대성을 강조하면서 개인의 자아정체성은 공동체의 역사와 전통 속에서 형성되므로 개인은 사회적, 역사적 요구와 책무를 회피해서는 안 되며 이것을 적극적으로 떠맡아야 한다고 주장한다. 또한 국가나 사회는 시민들이 공동체의 전통과 가치를 받아들이도록 힘써야 한다고 본다. 그리고 옳음은 좋음의 문제와 분리할 수 없으며, 좋음을 바탕으로 옳음을 판단할 수 있다고 주장하면서 특정 공동체에 타당한 특수한 윤리규범을 강조한다. 이러한 자유주의와 공동체주의 입장은 문제점을 안고 있기 때문에, 우리는 공동체의 연대성을 바탕으로 개인의 자율성도 확보할 수 방안을 모색해야 한다.

Liberalism and communitarianism seek different values and virtues. And they have different viewpoints about the problems of self identity, the neutrality of state, and the relation of justice(right) and happiness(good). liberalism emphasizes the liberal rights and autonomy of individuals and insists that individuals should have the maximal liberty unless they are harmful to the others. It insists that the state or the society should not interfere the values and the lifestyles of individuals. It emphasizes the general moral norms and the priority of justice to happiness. Communitarianism emphasizes the communal values and solidarity and insists that individuals should have the social and historical obligation because self identities of individuals are made in the history and tradition of community. It insists that the state or society should try to help individuals to admit the values and tradition of community. It emphasizes the special ethical norms and the inseparability of justice and happiness. Liberalism and communitarianism have shortcomings. We should seek the ways of combining the solidarity of community with the autonomy of individual.
