대서양 세계의 형성과 ‘서구의 흥기’

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recent historiography has stressed the need for a global perspective that surpasses the national borders of today. It is important to grasp how “the Atlantic World” was formed, especially in order to understand the development of the modern world. K. Pomeranz aroused disputes about the origin of the economic hegemony of the West over the rest of the world, setting the period of “the Great Divergence” at the end of the eighteenth century. Among the scholars who participated in the debate, D. Acemoglu drew our attention with his ingenious hypothesis of the First Great Divergence. He asserted that the Atlantic trade and the associated colonialism affected Europe not only directly, but also indirectly by inducing institutional change. Where “initial” political institutions placed significant checks on the monarchy, the growth of the Atlantic trade strengthened merchant groups by constraining the power of the monarchy. It helped merchants achieve political changes to protect their property rights. These changes were central to subsequent economic growth of the Northwestern countries such as England and the Netherlands, which came to link together and dominate the global seas.
