This study compares how Parasite (Bong Joon-ho, 2019) and The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook, 2016) construct class and gendered power through different directorial strategies, using realism and expressionism as key aesthetic frameworks. Although both films engage with shared themes such as inequality, violence, and desire, they organize these concerns in distinct ways. While Parasite emphasizes everyday plausibility and narrative coherence, The Handmaiden foregrounds heightened form and sensory intensity. Rather than treating these differences as isolated stylistic choices, this study approaches them as part of a broader spectrum through which contemporary Korean cinema represents class and power.
This study approaches textual and visual elements as parts of a shared narrative process rather than as separate analytical layers. Dialogue, including descriptive cues, is reorganized according to the four-part structure of gi–seung–jeon–gyeol, which makes it possible to trace how class and gendered power emerge through recurring word choices, modes of address, and relational dynamics. Visual analysis focuses on color and camera movement at the shot level, tracking how emphasis shifts as the narrative progresses. Reading these visual patterns alongside textual tendencies allows for an examination of moments where language and imagery reinforce one another, as well as points where their directions diverge.
The findings indicate that Parasite frames class inequality as a condition rooted in everyday material life, combining restrained dialogue with muted color contrasts and largely stable camera movement. Even in moments of heightened tension, the film maintains an observational tone consistent with a realist orientation. The Handmaiden, in contrast, relies on more overt stylistic intervention. Saturated colors, strong visual contrasts, and assertive camera movement are repeatedly mobilized, especially around narrative turning points, producing a representation of class and gendered power that is deliberately compositional and sensorial. Taken together, these results suggest that class representation in Korean cinema is shaped less by fixed aesthetic categories than by how dialogue, color, and camera work interact and shift across the narrative structure.
