The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of the etic and the emic variables on Koreans` conflict communication and to investigate the role of third party mediation for resolving conflicts in South Korea. Results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that among etic and emic variables, collectivism was positively related to the collaborative conflict resolution. On the other hand, power distance and social Chemyon, the unique cultural variables in Korea, was more related to avoidance, indirect and passive way of conflict resolution. However the influence of power distance and social Chemyon was moderated by the mediation styles. The impact of power distance and social Chemyon disappeared in evaluative mediation style. Results suggest that appropriate use of mediation could contribute to effective conflict resolution in South Korea.
