The objective of this research is to develop the ecological perspective’s framework as an alternative classroom research and to understand the nature of the class of geography. This dissertation regards geography classroom research as a study area and it investigates how secondary school’s class of geography is performed. Any other classroom research using qualitative approach has not dealt with the classroom research theories and framework. Thus, I tried to develop the theoretical frame presenting the characteristics of geography education.
This research finds a new direction in the class ecology emphasizing the interaction between an individual and environment. The perspective of classroom ecology has two advantages in that it can examine the cause and context that affect to the quality of class and it can deal with the diversity of the interaction between an individual and environment.
I assume a classroom as an ecosystem that is composed of a teacher, students, and educational contexts. This ecosystem can be accounted as the operation of some ecological principles. I included a micro analysis on the class as an important research area, because the analysis on the system of classroom cannot tell everything about the class. I selected the classroom organization, the didactic transposition, and the classroom management as the analytic themes of the class considering compositions of the class.
Through this procedure, the framework of this research is composed of three parts. They include the understanding for the classroom as a system (geography classroom ecosystem), the understanding for the class as the act within a system (geography class), the system’s dynamism as the result of the interaction between a system and its action (dynamism of geography classroom ecosystem). A field study was used not only to set up the research framework, but also to identify the possibility of the experimental research framework. I intended to obtain the basic data for the practical geography class through the field study.
The results that analyze the classroom ecosystem of sampled teachers through the field study are as the following:
The characteristics of an individual depend on the adaptation to the environment, but in the same context, the sampled teachers received similar environmental pressure in the similar environment. While beginning teachers have more complex environments to be adopted than those of experienced teachers, experienced teachers have a tendency to worry about dismissal.
In order to identify the relationships between the characteristics of the classroom ecosystem and the three themes of classroom organization, didactic transposition, classroom management, the difference between beginning teachers and experienced teachers was compared. The beginning teachers spent their time on set up the plan of the class, and experienced teachers’ class was characterized by the clear division of segment and systematic class organization. The results from the analysis of didactic transposition revealed that while experienced teachers used various didactic transpositions, and they used repetition and strategy to divide important contexts, beginning teachers tried to use new teaching methods and various multi media tools. In terms of classroom management, beginning teachers controlled their students by using the strategy of disturbance protection. In contrast, experienced teachers controlled their students by using the strategy of participation encouragement to keep the good classroom mood.
The sampled teachers’ self image managed the direction of the class and education at the highest level. However, their self images frequently collided with the principles and rules acting as the concrete practice. The beginning teachers more frequently faced the lack of internal consistency of practical knowledge than experienced teachers.
There were complex environmental needs in the geography classroom. In order to deal with those needs, the sampled teachers used "routinization strategy." Experienced teachers’ tacit rules were much clearer than those of beginning teachers. In terms of the interaction between the teacher and the students, the experienced teachers had a tendency for teacher-centered communication, but the beginning teachers had a solid tendency for student-centered communication. The geography class interacted with the characteristics of subject matter contents, class materials, students’ activities, progress of class, physical condition of teachers, preparation for class, school’s facilities, and policy of school management. Such an interaction affected the changes in class organization, didactic transposition, and classroom management.
In terms of the interaction between the classroom ecosystem and the class, the teachers had the similar styles in adapting to their environment. The beginning teachers had a lot of work to do in comparison to the skill dealing with the job. However, they tried to adapt to classroom ecosystem with endless reflective thinking and desire for being a good teacher. The experienced teachers were worried about dismissal, but performed their own role in the safety structure. They were the producers of culture and the main members of the school. While the beginning teachers were concerned about finding their own location in school and the class, the experienced teachers were concerned about the issues related to the curriculum, the geography class, and the development of the school.
All of the sampled teachers tried to understand the mechanism of the classroom ecosystem to make an adaptation and evolution to classroom environment and made their efforts to attract their students’ participation to the class by using didactic transposition that reveals the uniqueness of the subject matter. The students were confident with the teachers that use various materials such as photographs, maps, and video images, interact with their students, and teach a geographical knowledge obtained from the experience of the field work. As well, it was important for teachers to manage complex classroom situations well and it was considered as the basic nature of being a teacher. Despite these facts, the most important thing for an ideal geographical education was that geography teacher should be an expert with geographical knowledge in order to adapt to fast social changes and keep a good position in the school.
