The reasons for producing jewelry have changed through the centuries. In modernity probably most people would wear jewelry as an appernace purpose: for decorative purpose. But in ancient time, people would wear the jewelry as a symbolic and amuletic purpose. Jewelry has not always been made for its formal beauty alone. There is always human physical interacition with jewelry, and varied and complex motives behind personal adornment. To understand ancient jewelry, we must depend on our knowledge of materials in use at the time of the work of art was made. Ancient jewelry is more than jest a collection of precious metal and gemstones. It bears witness to the taste of the people of antiquity and to their technical skill in using materials. Therefore the study of ancient jewelry is also source of intellectual and aesthetic satisfaction.
