Whether the concept of globalization is defined enough to be utilized as an independent variable in the study of globalization's effects still remains unsolved. Especially, with the increasing challenges to globalization itself and the sceptical evaluation of globalization even among hyper-globalizers, the value of the concept of globalization as a variable has been greatly challenged. This study examines the trend of security studies related to globalization and suggests new directions for the studies of globalization's security implications.
There has been competing assessment of globalization in terms of its explanatory value and normative positions. The concept of globalization has been developed by hyper-globalizers, but there has never been a consensus on what it really means. At the lowest level, globalization is defined as an event or phenomena, but to those who believe that it means more than that, it is a concept which explains causes and consequences of globalization, and the nature of future society and power relations. Conceptualization of globalization faces two problems. One is to explain many diverse phenomena by one driving force. The other is to simplify many parameters of the concepts, such as causes, consequences, explanations, normative judgement, etc. The confusion of explanans and explanandum becomes the greatest obstacle to develop the explanatory scheme of globalization.
Security studies on globalization are characterized by tendencies to take the middle position between hyper-globalizers and sceptics and, to adopt the simplest version of globalization concept, and by reductionism. These cause logical contradictions in the course of finding globalization's security implications. All the characteristics are attributed to difficulties of conceptualization of globalization and incompleteness of the concept. From the analysis, this study suggests new directions for security studies: First, with recognition of incompleteness of the concept, security studies should be cautious in utilizing the concept of globalization. Second, well-defined conceptualization and coherent application of globalization are required. Finally, security studies should expand its research area from finding new threats from globalization on security to finding comprehensive security implications of globalization which can help overcome logical contradictions in security studies related to globalization.
