With banking sectors still suffering from the effects of the massive NPL(non-performing loan) crisis regarding real-estate Project Financing, public discussion of plans to place toxic assets in one or more bad banks has gained steam from 2011. As in the past, Korea Asset Manage Association(KAMCO) is buying decent portion of NPL these days and at this financial crisis, especially, a bad bank which has both government and private character in Korea a so-called UAMCO has appeared. It has been driven by government, however, funded and operated by private banks. As UAMCO is buying bad debts at relatively higher price in politic purpose, global hedge funds seldom participate in the open tender. This paper appraises ongoing bad bank operation mainly with KAMCO and UAMCO. Moreover, it reviews similar cases overseas and presents a plan how government can efficiently relieve ailing banks from toxic assets by transferring these assets into a publicly sponsored workout unit.
