동유럽 극우 민족주의의 기원과 특징에 관한 연구: 크로아티아 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구 배경은 동유럽 극우 민족주의 기원과 특징 그리고 그 양상이 서유럽과 차이를 보임에서 출발한다. 본 연구에선 크로아티아를 사례로 서유럽에서의 극우 민족주의가 ‘(역사적) 우월의식’과 그에 따른 혐오에 기초하지만, 동유럽에선 ‘(역사적) 피해의식’에 따른 혐오에 기초함에 주목하고 이를 분석, 확인하고자 했다.
19세기 민족주의 도입 시기, 제국 하 피지배 상태였던 동유럽 민족들은 주로 지배 민족이던 서유럽과 달리 민족-국가 간 경계가 불(不)일치했고, 이것은 주민족과 인종 집단 사이에 극단적 소수민족 대두를 불러왔으며, ‘우리’와 ‘그들’을 구분하는 데 있어 종교와 혈통, 언어 등 문화적 요소에 기초한 ‘문화적 민족주의’ 수립에 기초를 제공했다. 동유럽 민족들이 겪은 역사적 경험과 민족주의 도입 당시 시대적 상황은 동유럽 내 극우 민족주의가 서유럽과 다른 모습으로 발전되는 배경이 되었다. 사회주의 체제로 반세기동안 억눌려왔던 동유럽에서의 극우 민족주의는 20세기말 체제 전환 과정 중 대두된 유고지역 민족 분쟁에 있어 중요 변수로 자리했다. 그리고 이후 이어진 ICTY의 전범 처리 등 국제사회의 단죄 과정과 이를 받아들이지 못하는 현지 민족들의 인식에도 중요한 매개체로 자리하게 된다. 극우 민족주의와 극우 정권의 목소리는 현재까지도 이어져 크로아티아 등 동유럽 각국의 정치, 경제, 사회 속에 깊숙이 내재한 채 일반 대중들 사이에서 큰 힘을 발휘하는 중이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The research background of this study start from the fact that the origin, characteristics and its aspects of Far-right nationalism in Eastern Europe are different from those of Western Europe. In this study, I noted that while Far-right nationalism in Western Europe is based on a ‘(historical) consciousness of superiority’, in Eastern Europe, it is based on a ‘(historical) consciousness of victim’. And I analyzed Far-right nationalism in Eastern Europe on the basis of this research perspective focusing on the case of Croatia.
When Nationalism was introduced in the 19th century, Eastern European peoples were in a subjected under Western Europe, so majority of them were inconsistent with Nation-State boundary unlike Western Europe. Therefore Eastern Europe distinguished ‘We’ and ‘They’ according to the establishing ‘Cultural Nationalism’ based on cultural factors such as religion, lineage and language. And the historical experiences and elements of nationalism which Eastern European peoples were experienced became the background for establishing the origin and characteristics of Far-right nationalism in this area, different from that of Western Europe. The Far-right nationalism in Eastern Europe was suppressed by the Socialist systems for half a century. But this has become an important variable in the regional ethnic conflict that emerged during the System Transition process at the end of the 20th century. And it became an important medium in the process of condemnation by the international community such as ICTY, and in establishing the awareness of local peoples who cannot accept it. The voices of Far-right nationalism and Far-right regimes are still deeply embedded in the politics, economy, and society of Eastern European countries, and are exerting great power among the general public.
