This study examined the effects of art therapy on the improvement of self-expression and self-esteem of an adolescent with mild intellectual disability. An adolescent with mild intellectual disability at A Community
Child Center in C city was the subject in this study. This art therapy program consisted of 15 therapy sessions in total, where each session lasted 50 minutes twice a week for 8 weeks from March 6, 2015 to April 24, 2015.
Before and after this program, Rakos & Schroeder's scale and self-esteem scale were conducted on the subject. This study showed the enhancement on the self-expression and self-esteem of the adolescent with mild intellectual disability. And the result from the quality analysis in this study also suggested the subject displayed more active self-expression in the later session than in the initial. Consequently, according to this study, art therapy positively makes an effect on the improvement of the self-expression and self-esteem of the adolescent with mild intellectual disability.
