To explain the dynamics behind the digital TV transition, this study investigates the impacts of firm characteristics, market characteristics, and market demographics on the timing of digital TV adoption by the U.S. broadcast TV stations. Multiple regression was conducted for the stations owned by the largest 25 TV groups. The results showed that ownership, horizontal integration, vertical integration, competition, market size, and income were significant factors that influenced the timing of digital TV adoption. The findings suggest that market size was consistently the most influential determinant of the timing of digital TV adoption.
