E.T.A. 호프만 문학과 자연과학 = E.T.A. Hoffmann and die Naturwissenschaften

For E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776 - 1822), one of the key authors of the Romantic movement and the revered pioneer of Fantasy literature
who is, accordingly, referred to as author of the ‘Schwarze
Romantik’ or ‘Fantastic Realism,’ the new natural sciences (die
Naturwissenschaften) of the time nourished and enriched his
unprecedented imagination. These studies had tremendous influence
not only on Hoffmann’s perspective toward reality and literature but
also on his literary metaphor and expression. Hoffmann’s literature
covers such a variety of academic and scientific subjects as to be
called ‘the arena of scholarly competition’ and ‘the exhibit of new
sciences’. What provides Hoffmann’s fantastic literature with its
significance in the history of science is the depiction of the
transition from alchemy to modern natural science around the 1800s.
This study has focused on the meaning and function of the natural
science – the new science of the time - portrayed in Hoffmann’s
literature through the examples of electronics, optics and geometry,
while presenting an overview of the influence of other sciences as
well. Further, this study has reached the conclusion that the
previous studies regarding Hoffmann as an ‘anti-scientist’ have been
misconceptions. Hoffmann’s literature supports this argument by
demonstrating that nature and science are not mutually exclusive
and that scientific knowledge and accomplishment can potentially be
used either for good or evil. The moral standard of the natural
scientist in Hoffmann’s discourse lies in the scientist’s relationship
with nature - whether the scientist’s attitude toward nature is one
of ‘genuine understanding of nature’ or one of ‘conquest and control
of nature.’ Not to mention his sufficiently grounded positive view on
science, Hoffmann appeals to the perception of the breach between
the two polarizing attitudes – the understanding of nature and the
conquest of nature. In this regard, Hoffmann’s literature acquires
acute timeliness from today’s ecological point of view.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

‘마적 낭만주의’ 혹은 ‘환상적 리얼리즘’ 작가로 불리며 판타지 문학
의 효시로 꼽히는 에.테.아. 호프만(E.T.A. Hoffmann, 1776-1822)에게
있어 당시의 새로운 학문인 자연과학은 그의 전무후무한 상상력의 보
고(寶庫)이자 원천이었다. 이들 학문은 호프만의 현실관과 문학관은 물
론, 그의 문학적 메타포와 표현에도 지대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 따라서 그
의 문학작품은 당대의 새로운 과학의 전시장이자 학자들의 각축장이라
고 불릴 만큼 그 속에 다양한 학문과 과학자들이 등장한다. 호프만의
문학이 과학사적으로도 흥미로운 것은 그의 환상적인 작품들 속에
1800년경 연금술에서 근대 자연과학으로의 전이가 일어나는 단계가 포
착되어 있기 때문이다. 이에 본 연구는 호프만 문학에서 당대의 신학문
인 자연과학이 가지는 의미와 기능을 전기학, 광학, 기하학의 예를 중
심으로 다루었으며, 박물학 등 기타 학문의 영향에 대해서도 개괄해보
았다. 본 연구는 호프만을 ‘반과학주의’로 규정지어 온 기존의 연구들이
큰 오류를 범한 것이라는 결론에 도달했다. 자연과 과학이 결코 서로
배제하지 않으며, 동일한 과학적 지식이나 업적이 선으로도 악으로도
기능 할 가능성을 보여주는 것이 호프만 문학의 특징이기 때문이다. 여
기서 호프만이 설정한 자연연구자의 도덕성의 기준은 연구자의 자연과
의 관계가 ‘자연에 대한 진정한 인식’으로 이어지는가, 아니면 ‘자연의
정복과 지배’로 귀결되는가 하는 데 있다. 호프만에게서 과학의 긍정적
인 가치는 충분히 평가되고 있는바, 그가 호소하는 것은 자연인식과 자연지배 사이에 존재하는 간극의 인식이다. 바로 이러한 점에서 호프만
의 문학은 오늘날의 생태학적 관점에서 볼 때도 고도의 시의성을 지니
고 있다.
