Neurogenic bladder is a disease of the bladder and urethra created by damage of the nervous system. The number of patients is increasing every year among all age groups, and it is a chronic disease that requires continuous management. Quality of life is an important health outcome indicator for chronic patients, and important concept that affects physical health. However, most studies related to neurogenic bladder are limited to verifying pathophysiology or therapeutic effectiveness. Research on their quality of life and the factors influencing quality of life is still rare. Therefore, this study was conducted to provide basic data for nursing intervention development that can improve the quality of life of neurogenic bladder patients by identifying factors related to the quality of life.
This study is a cross-sectional descriptive survey study, and a study was conducted on 118 neurogenic bladder patients visited the urology department outpatient clinic at a A tertiary care hospital in Seoul in September 2021. Data collection was conducted using self-report questionnaires using NBSS-SF, PIH-K, BIPQ, MSPSS, and SF-Qualiveen. IBM SPSS Statistics 23 (IBM, Chicago, IL) was used for the analysis of the collected data and analyzed through hierarchical multiple regression analysis.
As for the voiding method of the study subjects, 63.6% of the subjects had spontaneous voiding, and intermittent catheter was the most common at 26.3% in cases other than spontaneous voiding. The subject's voiding symptom were measured to be 14.99±4.95, self-care to be 80.16±12.08, illness perception to be 66.62±7.86, social support to be 46.09±11.67, and quality of life to be 2.00±1.10. The factor related to the subject's quality of life is voiding method (β=.45, p<.001), social support(β=.26, p=.006), the number of voiding (β=-.21, p<.001), voiding symptom(β=-.19, p=.001), self-care(β=.15, p=.013), age(β=-.14, p=.016), and these factors explained 66.6% of the variance of quality of life(F=26.94, p<.001).
Among the factors confirmed to be related to the quality of life of neurogenic bladder patients, social support and self-care are variables that can be promoted through nursing intervention. Therefore, it is necessary to develop related nursing interventions related to these variables in the future and make efforts to improve the quality of life of neurogenic bladder patients.
