Hemingway and Faulkner are the greatest American writers of the 20th century. This study investigates the writers’ stylistic and thematic tendencies by focusing on their treatment of To Have and Have Not, a work that Hemingway created as a novel and later Faulkner adapted as a screenplay. The study describes the authors’ world-view and thematic vision through detailed analysis. It explores how the works play a role of a crucial transition for their visions. It also compares the role of the works in the context of the writers’ other works and concludes that To Have and Have Not is a critical work for each artist. For Hemingway, the novel is the culmination of his movement towards his most mature vision of his heroes, as Harry Morgan gives him the bridging character to move beyond Nick, Jake and Frederic to his most mature heroes: Robert Jordan and Santiago. For Faulkner, the work offers another opportunity to project his mature world-view onto a broad audience.
