한국 노인 자살률 변동과 사회구조적 요인에 관한 연구 = Trends in Elderly Suicide Rates and Social Factors in Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzed the trends in elderly suicide rates from 1983 to 2002 with the data released by Korea National Statistical Office. It compared elderly suicide rates with those of other age groups' to explain overall trends, and analyzed elderly suicide rates with relation to other social indicators including rates of divorce, unemployment, economic growth, and elderly economic participation.
Elderly suicide rate increased in times of divorce increase, but didn't necessarily increase with unemployment increase, failing to show consistent relationship between these two rates. As for the implications of economic growth, elderly suicide rates appeared high especially in years when economic growth rate was lower than the year before. And the rate also increased when elderly economic participation rate fell down.
Now Korean society must have concern in this issue and come up with various efforts to prevent elderly suicides.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 1983년부터 2002년까지 통계청에서 발표한 노인 자살률의 변동 추이를 분석하는 것이다. 분석은 연령별 자살률과 노인인구의 자살률 경향을 검토하여 그 추이를 설명하고 이혼율, 실업률의 변동과 노인자살률의 변동 그리고 경제성장률, 노인경제활동 참가율과 노인 자살률의 변동 경향을 분석하였다.
이혼율이 증가하던 시기에 노인 자살률이 증가하였고, 실업률이 증가할 때 반드시 노인 자살률이 증가하지 않아 실업의 시기와 노인자살률은 일관된 변화가 없었다. 경제성장률의 변동시기와 노인자살률의 관계를 보면 경제성장이 전년도에 비해 이루어지지 않을 때 노인 자살률이 특히 높게 나타났다. 노인들의 경제활동이 줄어들 때 자살률이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
우리 사회가 이제 노인 자살에 대해 관심을 가지고 보다 자살을 예방하기 위한 다각적인 노력이 수반되어야 할 것이다.
