Chosun dynasty (1392-1910) was the era of Korean art. The painting in Chosun dynasty showed a variety of aspects according to different era and artist, and may be divided into 4 different stages. The early stage may be from 1392 to 1550, mid stage may be from 1550 to 1700, later stage may be from 1700 to 1850 and the last stage may be from 1850 to 1910.
The early Chosun's painting adopted Chinese painting style, which were accumulated during Koryu dynasty and there was an active relationship with Myung dynasty in China relevant to painting. It adopted the style of Buksong's Gwakhee and produced Chosun's own style called Ahngyun, which was popular among painters, and Wonche style and Jeolpa style were introduced, and Mahapa of Namsong style of painting was introduced by Lee, Sang-Jwa, and the landscape style which was evident in the paintings of Lee, Jang-Son and Seo, Mun-Bo was introduced. Chosun adopted Chinese paintings selectively and produced its own style of painting.
Many different painting style was introduced in early Chosun dynasty. This thesis wishes to show the different painting styles such as Lee-Gwak, Wonche of Namsong, Jeolpa and Mibub painting style.
In the chapter 2, the noble man's, who was the main influence of the foundation of Chosun dynasty, characteristic and their role for landscape paintings in early Chosun dynasty are examined. In the chapter 3, above 5 painting styles are examined. In the chapter 4, Ahn Gyun's <Mongyudo wondo>, <Sasipalgyungdo>, <Sosang palgyungdo>, which represent the early Chosun's landscape paintings, and Lee, Sang-Jwa's <Songhabo Wordo>, which represents the Wonche of Namsong's painting style, Kang, Hee-Ahn's <Gosagwansudo>, which shows the Jeolpa style and <Sansudo>, which shows the 16th Century's Ahn Gyun's painting style are examined.
The trend of artists in early Chosun dynasty was examined through works and records and explored the life and artists in early Chosun dynasty to examine Lee Gwak, Maha, Mibub landscape, Jeol and Myung dynasty's Wonche painting style.
Artists from Chosun showed a strong traditionalism. This was evident after analyzing chapter 2, the background of the era, and 3.the trend of early Chosun artists. This trend became more clear in 16th Century. Artists after early 16th Century succeeded the painting style from 15th Century, and they were less influenced by the painting style of Myung dynasty of China and this may be regarded as a good example. The early Chosun's artists were able to produce their own painting style with their own sense of beauty, traditionalism and their careful adoption of Chinese painting style.
In the chapter 3, <Mongyudo wondo>, which represents the landscape painting in early Chisun dynasty, and he, as mentioned previously, adopted Lee Gwak's style and produced his own style later. His character is evident in his work of <Mongyudo wondo> and <Sasipalgyungdo>.
Several mountains and hills are combined to form a landscape painting in <Mongyudo wondo>. Each mountain and hill are divided by fog and are integrated to form a landscape. This is a combination of independent mountains and this is evident in many landscape paintings from early Chosun dynasty.
The composition characteristic of <Sasipalgyungdo> and its space concept is similar to <Mongyudo wondo> and it influenced the artists in later stages. The composition characteristic of <Sasipalgyungdo> by Ahn Gyun was succeeded to artists in 15th Century as well as 16th Century.
Despite of Ahn Gyun's works, which mainly focused on landscape and less focused on people, <Gosagwansudo> by Kang, Hee-Ahn focused mainly on people and less on landscape. It showed the characteristic of Jeolpa's Sogyung landscape and portrait. However the stroke of brush was active and stylish and showed the sense of literature, which characterized such work from works drawn by professional artists. This style was not popular in 15th Century but became popular in mid Chosun dynasty. It was found that Lee, Sang-Jwa's style needed more attention along with Ahn Gyun and Kang, Hee-Ahn's landscape painting from early Chosun dynasty through this study. In chapter 4, Lee, Sang-Jwa adopted Namsong's Mawon style, and this may be proved by his work <Songhabowordo>. There was a hill in the left bottom corner, and there was a tall pine tree on the hill. The conner composition and bent pine trees, and a scholar and a child's appearance opposite to the direction of wind under the moon light proved that it has a close relationship with Mawon style of Namsong.
In early Chosun dynasty, Ahn Gyun's style of paintings based on the Lee Gwak's painting style were popular, and some artists adopted Namsong's Wonche style, Myung dynasty's Jeolpa style or Mibub landscape style, and produced Korean painting style.
The landscape paintings drawn in early Chosun dynasty, in about 1550, were based on Ahn- Gyun's style and also Namsong's Wonche and Jeolpa style were added to show a different trend from the previous painting style.
Artists in early Chosun dynasty produced Korean painting style based on the influence of Chinese painting, and Korean painting style was evident in Ahn Gyun's style, and its characteristic was evident in the paintings' composition, space concept, etc.
