숨가쁜 정신 = The Breathlessness of the Spirit: Polemics between Derrida and Levinas on the Spirit of the Metaphysics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

레비나스와 데리다는 오래되고 친밀한 지적 교류를 통해 서로에게 큰 영향을 주고받아 왔다. 그런 만큼 이 철학적 우정은 많은 주석가들의 관심을 받아 왔고 여러 각도에서 조명을 받아 왔다. 그러나 이 작업들은 두 사상가 사이의 복잡다단한 철학적 관계를 꿰뚫어 보기에 충분한 빛을 던져 주지 못한 것으로 보인다. 우리는 그 원인이 양자 사이의 논쟁에서 핵심이 되는 쟁점을 명확히 파악하게 해 줄 수 있는 관점을 얻는 데 실패했기 때문이라고 생각한다. 본 논문은 그런 관점이 영기론이라 부를 만한 것에 놓여 있다는 확신에서 출발한다. 영기론의 관점에서 보면 데리다와 레비나스의 논쟁에서 핵심 쟁점은 형이상학의 정신을 어떻게 파악할 것인가의 문제임이 드러난다. 그런데 이 고도의 형이상학적인 쟁점이 결국에는 경험의 가장 직접적인 차원인 숨, 호흡의 문제로 소급된다. 이 감성적인 문제를 두고 두 철학자가 보이는 차이가 정신, 언어, 철학적 비판 혹은 경계심으로서의 현상학적 환원 등 매우 사변적인 주제들에 관한 그들의 견해 차이를 결정한다. 이 글의 목표는 영기론적 논쟁을 재구성함으로써 레비나스와 데리다 사이의 관계를, 그리고 이들 각각의 사상을 파악할 수 있는 깊이와 높이를 갖춘 조망을 제공하려는 데 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Levinas and Derrida have had an great influence on each other through their long-standing and intimate intellectual relationship. Consequently this philosophical friendship has interested numerous commentators and has been illuminated in various points of view. But these works don’ seem to succeed in shedding an penetrating light on the complicated relationship between our tow thinkers. I think that the reason for it is that they fail to conceive a perspective which permits to seize the core issue in this polemics. This article starts from the conviction that such perspective is to be in what we call “pneumatology” This perspective of pneumatology reveals that the central issue of the polemics in question consists in how to apprehend the spirit of the metaphysics. This issue refers to, in the last analysis, the problem concerning the nature of an immediate sensible experience: breath. The difference between our two philosophers on this sensible experience explains that which separate them on the very speculative topics such as the language, the spirit and the phenomenological reduction understood as the philosophical vigilance. By reconstructing the pneumatological issue, this work purposes to offer a height and a depth from which on can penetrate the relation between Derrida and Levinas, and the thought of each of them.
