(PIAAC: Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies)

This study analyzed the impact of adult learners’ participation in lifelong education on improving their adaptive problem-solving skills and suggested policy implications according to generations. Ordinary least squares regression analyses were conducted using data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies(PIAAC) Cycle 2 in Korea. Adult learners were defined as those aged 25 years and older who; were limited to informal learning in lifelong education. The adults were categorized into four groups: Generation Z, Millennials, Generation X and Baby Boomers. The results revealed the following: First, Baby Boomers exhibited the lowest average adaptive problem-solving scores and adaptive their problem-solving performance declined with increasing generational age. Participants’ informal education rates were similar across all generations. Second, participation in informal education had a statistically significant positive effect on adaptive problem-solving skills at the .01 level. Third, while positive effects of informal education were observed for Millennials and Generation X, no statistically significant effect was found for Generation Z and Baby Boomers, indicating differential effects across generations.
Based on these findings, lifelong education programs should be designed using generation-specific and tailored approaches to ensure effectiveness.
