This study used data from PISA 2022 to examine the effects of student- and school-level educational context variables on cognitive achievement in mathematics, reading, and science. Focusing on four high-performing countries – Korea, Chinese Taipei, Estonia, and Canada – a two-level Multiple-Group Multilevel Model was applied to analyze cross-national similarities and differences in the relationships between educational context variables and student achievement. The main findings are as follows.
First, student- and school-level economic, social and cultural status were the most consistent and robust predictors of achievement across all three domains and all four countries. Second, domain-specific common predictors in mathematics, reading, and science were as follows: mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics anxiety in mathematics, gender and curiosity in reading, and curiosity and schools’ efforts to maintain learning during school closures in science. Third, the effects of affective characteristics and COVID-19–related educational context variables varied across countries and cognitive domains, indicating that the same educational context variables may function differently depending on national educational systems and learning environments. By conducting a multilevel comparative analysis of high-performing countries, this study empirically demonstrates both the commonalities and contextual differences in the mechanisms through which educational context variables are associated with cognitive achievement. The findings may inform policy discussions and school-level support strategies aimed at ensuring learning continuity during future educational crises.
