Introduction: The elderly is an important social issue in these days due to the increased average span of human life, therefore, concerns about how to spend prolonged successful old age is remarkably increasing. It is necessary to supply fundamental materials to better understand aged people, to perform wholesome nursing, and to help developing and executing programs for the elderly by searching for influencing factors which help to achieve self-esteem for successful aging.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to know influencing factors self-esteem in whole by observing its level among commonly aged people, grasping if there is any difference of its level through their general characteristics, and inspecting relationships among influencing factors of self-esteem in the elderly such as perceived health status, depression, life satisfaction, family support, quality of life.
Method: Materials had been collected from January 10 to April 10, 2007 for 90 days, then 357 cases of survey which was taken from men and women who are over 65 and living in Ha-Gye Dong, No-Won Gu were subjected.
Collected materials were statistically treated with SAS program such as general characteristics of elderly in survey by frequency and percentage, degree of self-esteem, perceived health status, depression, life satisfaction, family support and quality of life by average and the standard deviation, and correlationship between self-esteem and influencing factors by Pearson`s Correlation Coefficient. Analysis of influencing factors of self-esteem in the elderly were anatomized by Multiple Regression.
Result: Followings are results of this study;
First, self-esteem of elderly in survey had a common level of 3.0 in 4 scales. The mean of perceived health status was 6.6 which showed moderate perceived health status, the mean of depression was 1.4 which showed moderate depression, the mean of life satisfaction was 2.0 which showed moderate life satisfaction, the mean of family support was 3.8 which showed moderate family support, and the mean of quality of life was 3.2 which showed moderate quality of life.
Second, smooth correlation was observed when the level of self-esteem was increased as perceived health status in the elderly was improved (r= .3304, p<.0001), quality of life(r= .5883, p<.0001), economic status (r= .3588, p<.0001), family support (r= .4749, p<.0001)was higher, and the level of life satisfaction(r= .5051, p<.0001)was bettered. However, counter person correlation (r=- .5565, p<.0001) was observed when the level of self-esteem was increased as the level of depression was decreased.
Third, as a result of multiple regression that was performed to seek effects of influencing factors to self-esteem, depression(β=- .274)was revealed as the most powerful factor in the elderly, then quality of life(β= .206), economic status(β= .136) and family support(β= .185) followed in order. These factors explain self-esteem of the elderly in a range of 44.5 percent.
Conclusion: Through the result as above, it is necessary to keep lower level of depression in psychological aspect and higher level of perceived health status, life satisfaction, family support and quality of life in intellectual aspect so to expect successful aging with higher level of self-esteem. Therefore, nursing and program development for the elderly must focus on how to reduce depression and how to increase quality of life, economic status and family support. A plan should be suggested to secure satisfiable the winter of life.
