This paper examines the meaning, content, and contribution of The Korean Repository, focusing on the 1892 publications. The Korean Repository, the first English-language magazine, published by foreign missionaries in Korea. The Korean Repository began publication in 1892 and was issued monthly for five years from 1895 to 1898, after a period of rest in 1893 and 1894. It is easy to think that the journal has the character of a professional missionary because it was published by missionaries, but it is actually called a treasure of Korean studies because it deals with a wide variety of fields such as politics, economy, society, culture, language, customs, history, education, and trips in Korea.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 한국에 내한한 선교사들이 간행했던 월간 잡지 가운데 가장 처음 발간했던 영문 잡지인 The Korean Repository의 1892년 간행물을 중심으로 Korean Repository가 갖는 의미와 내용, 그리고 공헌을 살펴본 논문이다. Korean Repository는 1892년부터 간행하기 시작해서 1893년과 18994년의 휴간 후, 다시 1895년부터 1898년까지 5년 동안 매달 간행하였다. 이 저널은 선교사들이 발행했기에 전문적인 선교지(誌)의 성격을 띠고 있으리라고 생각하기 쉬우나, 실제로는 우리나라의 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 언어, 풍습, 역사, 교육, 여행기 등 매우 다양한 분야를 다루고 있어 과히 한국학의 보고라 불릴만하다.
