원불교와 불교의 관계 재고

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Is Won-Buddhism considered Buddhism or not? This discourse emerged during the 1970s and the inclination of most scholars was to analyze the relational influence between Won-Buddhism and Buddhism. However, the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order already grappled with the process of change throughout their long history and it is obvious by examining schools within Korean Buddhism, besides the Jogye Order, such as Cheontaejong(天台宗), Jingak jong (眞覺宗), Hwaeom jong (華嚴宗) and others that most of them underwent transformation since the modern period. As such, in order to understand the course of Korean Buddhism we have to first think about how Korean Buddhism came to be what it is today and what processes of transformation it underwent by examining Buddhist history. This paper argues that we have to re-think the problem of Buddhism and Won-Buddhism within that process of transformation. In other words, we should not examine the relational “influence” between Buddhism and Won-Buddhism, rather we should focus on what kind of “role” Buddhism and Won-Buddhism are responsible for in the present period by examining the transformations of other types Buddhism throughout history. By doing so we will shed new light on this issue, and establish a new identity of Buddhism and Won-Buddhism in modern society.
