This study examines patterns of gender bias and gender stereotypes in the definitions and example sentences of 1,942 beginner-level entries in the Basic Korean Dictionary, a web-based dictionary for Korean language learners published by the National Institute of the Korean Language. Drawing on established categories of sexist language, five analytical domains were identified: roles (housework, caregiving, and occupations), appearance, attributes, sexual objectification, and derogatory expressions. The definitions and example sentences for each entry were analyzed to identify the gender of the subjects appearing in the examples and to examine patterns of gender representation.
The analysis showed that in the domain of housework, 89.6% of the subjects performing household tasks were women and 10.4% were men. Women, particularly mothers, were depicted to a considerable degree as primarily responsible for domestic labor. Women were portrayed as performing both the practical and managerial aspects of housework, whereas men appeared less frequently as performers of household tasks. In contrast, outdoor labor related to housing maintenance, such as yard work or home repairs, tended to be represented as predominantly male.
In the caregiving domain, 84.4% of caregiving subjects were women and 15.6% were men, indicating a pronounced gender imbalance in the representation of caregiving roles. Several examples suggested that childcare was implicitly framed as a responsibility more closely associated with women.
In the occupation domain, women accounted for 22.4% of the subjects presented as having a profession, while men accounted for 77.6%, reflecting a substantial disparity in representations of economic participation. Fathers were frequently described as primary breadwinners, whereas the occupations attributed to mothers were largely confined to areas such as education or volunteer work. In entries related to economic activity and social status, such as 'saenghwal'(living), 'hoesawon'(office worker), 'yeolda'(open), 'jari'(position), the subjects were predominantly male.
In the appearance domain, references to women’s appearance constituted 69.5% of the examples, compared to 30.5% for men, indicating that women’s appearance was addressed at a markedly higher rate. Diet-related examples were concentrated almost exclusively on women, while descriptions of men with slender bodies were often framed negatively.
With respect to gendered attributes, the examples tended to associate masculinity with strength, toughness, and authority, whereas femininity was linked to modesty and gentleness. This contrast was not only observed in examples describing gendered characteristics but was also evident in the definitions of the entries 'namja'(man) and 'yeoja'(woman).
In the domains of sexual objectification and derogatory language, the definitions of certain entries, such as 'meokda'(vulgar slang: ‘fuck’) and 'palda'(derogatory metaphor: ‘sell one’s body’), reflected a male-centered perspective in which women’s bodies or sexuality were objectified, and derogatory terms such as 'gyejip'(derogatory term for a woman) appeared in some example sentences.
At the same time, the dictionary also contained a number of examples that sought to recognize and mitigate gender stereotypes. Entries such as 'gil'(path), 'namseong'(man), 'yeoseong'(woman), 'ttal'(daughter) and 'ganhosa'(nurse), included example sentences addressing gender equality, women’s participation in the workforce, and the gender neutrality of occupations.
Overall, these findings suggest that the example sentences in the Basic Korean Dictionary reflect, to a considerable extent, gender-role stereotypes and gender biases present in contemporary Korean society. By analyzing a public dictionary produced by a National Institute of the Korean Language, this study provides foundational data that may contribute to future dictionary compilation and revision processes, particularly with regard to identifying sexist elements and constructing more balanced and inclusive example sentences.
