The Uiseong Tapri tomb was excavated by the 1960 National Museum research team. During the excavation, 5 chamber tombs were found in the oval burial mound. The gilt bronze crown was excavated from coffin I, and silver pendants, gilt bronze buckles, and glass necklaces were also excavated. The gilt bronze crown has a shape in which a gilt bronze plate is cut to set the base after which three crown ornaments are set on top of it. The rims of the three long crown ornaments are successively cut and twisted 5-6 times to create a bird’s feather like shape. The fact that three crown ornaments were set up on the crown is related to the Silla crowns but is different in appearance to the branched crown ornaments and the deer antler shaped crown ornaments. The gilt bronze crown from coffin I at the Uiseong Tapri tomb shares elements with Silla crowns and Goguryeo crowns but has attracted attention due to its systemicity which is derived from its unique shape.
This research paper has examined the systemicity of the gilt bronze crown of coffin I at Uiseong Tapri with a focus on its formative characteristics. Manufactured by the Silla royal family and given to the owner of the tomb of coffin I at Uiseong Tapri, a powerful figure of Chomun-guk, this gilt bronze crown’s crown ornaments has a bird feather shape, so it has been compared to the sogol-gwan of Goguryeo. However, when compared to the gilt bronze crown ornaments excavated from Ji’an and owned by the National Museum of Korea and the gilt bronze crown ornaments owned by the Liaoning Museum, which are thought to be Goguryeo sogol-gwans, the gilt bronze crown of coffin I at Uiseong Tapri has a fundamentally different mode of wearing to Goguryeo hair crowns with its headband crown hanging pendants.
The sogol-gwan of Goguryeo display a form that combines a chevron pattern crown ornament used to express rank in China with a basic form called Jowoo-gwan. The silver and gilt bronze crowns of the Hwangnamdaechong south tomb expresses the form of crown ornaments involving mountains and bird wings and may be observed in Goguryeo sogol-gwan. However the gilt bronze crown of coffin I at Uiseong Tapri has a different system from the Goguryeo sogol-gwan. The feather shape ornaments expressed on the boundary of the gilt bronze crown ornaments found in coffin I at Uisong Tapri may be connected to birds, but the crown ornament itself seems to symbolize a tree. The grounds for this are the bead shape that finishes the upper part of the crown ornament and the openwork tree leaf pattern also on the upper part.
First, the tree leaf pattern seems to be related to the three leaf pattern on the gilt bronze crown from tomb no. 10.11 at Bokcheon-dong and on the gilt bronze crown owned by the Liaoning Museum. The origins of the three leaf pattern may be found in the ancient near east and is thought to have been transmitted to Goguryeo from the Sakha and Altai culture of Achaemenes Persia and Central Asia. The three leaf pattern is understood as representing the tree of life. On the other hand, the tree leaf pattern on the gilt bronze crown of Uiseong Tapri coffin I has a form that seems to have detached a ornamental hairpin from a slim metal plate. In the case of Goguryeo, many gold ornaments with tree leaf ornamental hairpins have been excavated from the Ji’an region including the Taewangreung.
Next, the study examined the context of decorating beads on trees. The examples of finishing the end of crown ornaments in the style of beads can be found, without exception, in the branched ornament gold crowns of Silla including the gold crown of the north tomb and the gilt bronze crown of the south tomb at Hwangnamdaechong, which includes the Gyodong tomb gold crown. This seems to have been the continued tradition since the Samhan period when the people believed that trees were a medium leading to the sky of light. Lastly, the understanding the gilt bronze crown ornaments as birds and trees is connect...
