This study is an intensive analysis of Chaepayueui (采?遺意), recently excavated literature. Chaepayueui translated orally transmitted Korean proverbs into Chinese, and there are two versions, one owned by the National Library of Korea and the other owned by Yonsei University. This study focused on the version of the National Library of Korea. Attaching high significance to the value and collection of proverbs, the compiler of Chaepayueui collected a large number of proverbs circulating among the folks and translated them into Chinese in the form of couplet with four words each line as found in The Book of Odes (詩經). The compiler of Chaepayueui had a very clear sense of purpose for his work, which was that collecting Korean proverbs and translating them into Chinese was inheriting the good intention of The Book of Odes. This study attempted to explain first who the compiler was and then when the book was compiled. What has been presumed in previous studies is that the book was compiled by Yak-yong Jeong (丁若鏞) in 1972. This study, however, suggests the possibility that Chaepayueui might be compiled in 1852 after the death of Yak-yong Jeong, and not by Yak-yong Jeong but by one of those around Yak-yong Jeong. Next, this study analyzed all the proverbs contained in Chaepayueui, and identified three characteristics of this proverb collection as follows. First, Chaepayueui is the most extensive proverb collection in Korean history, and it contains a large number of new proverbs not found in previous proverb collections. Second, the book collected various colors of proverbs reflecting the social conditions in those days from an open perspective. In particular, vulgar sayings occupy a large part of the collection. Third, the collection includes unreservedly many proverbs criticizing the ruling class and government officials in those days. The straightforwardness and radicality of the expressions were unprecedented in previous proverb collections.
