영남지역 퇴계문인의 서원건립과 교육활동 = The Construction of Seowon (Private Academy) and the Educational Activities of Disciples of Teoigye in Yeongnam Area

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 서원이 보급되는 초창기 퇴계와 그 문인들의 서원건립 활동과 영남지역을 중심으로 한 서원의 교육활동을 검토하였다. 조선에 있어서 서원제도는 주세붕의 백운동서원 설립으로 출현하였지만 이를 조선사회에 보급ㆍ정착시키고 그 성격을 규정하여 발전의 토대를 마련한 것은 퇴계 이황이었다. 이러한 퇴계의 서원보급 운동에 문인들이 적극적으로 나섬으로써 서원은 단기간에 조선사회에 자리잡게 되었다. 퇴계 문인으로 서원건립에 관여한 사람은 56명으로 43개 서원의 건립에 직간접적으로 참여하여, 이 시기 서원 건립에 주도적인 역할을 하였으며, 나아가 서원제의 전국적인 보급에 크게 기여하였다.
본고에서는 이러한 퇴계문인들의 서원 건립과 퇴계의 서원론을 계승한 영남지역 서원의 교육활동을 살펴보았다. 서원의 일차적 기능이 교육적 측면에 있었다는 점에서, 일찍부터 이 분야에 대한 다양한 연구가 있어왔지만 자료상의 문제로 일정한 한계가 있었다. 1980년대 이후 향촌사회사 연구의 일환으로 개별 서원 소장의 필사원본류와 고문서 자료에 대한 수집ㆍ정리가 이루어지면서, 서원 교육과 관련된 자료가 많지는 않지만 조금씩 소개되고 있다. 이러한 자료는 서원교육에 대한 구체적인 내용을 담고 있는 가장 일차적인 자료라는 점에서 자료적 가치가 크다. 본 논문은 이러한 자료들을 토대로 영남지역 서원의 입원생의 자격, 절차 및 교육활동에 대해 검토하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper reviewed the activities regarding constructions of Teoigye Seowon and the educational activities of the disciples of Teoigye focusing on Yeongnam area during the early period of the distribution of Seowon. Seowon was a representative country operating organization of the noble men since the later Joseon period; however, its primary function had an educational aspect in that it had been begun originally as an educational institute for Ganghak (mastering of study and researching) and Jangsu (reading books and striving in studying) aimed at Confucian scholars or students. Therefore, although there have been various studies on this area, there has been a certain limitation. As for such a limitation regarding education in Seowon, the great problem was related to its relevant data.
As the collection and reorganizing of the original copies of manuscripts and archives owned by individual Seowon have been conducted as one of the research projects into the country society history since the 1980s, data related to education in Seowon has been introduced little by little. Such data has a high value as it is because it is the most primary data which contains the details of education in Seowon. This paper is to review the qualifications, procedures, and educational activities of newly enrolled students for Seowon in the Yeongnam area based on the data.
Also, this paper looked into the activities for construction of Teoigye Seowon by the disciples of Teoigye which occurred during the early period since the education conducted in Seowon of the Yeongnam area distributed and established Seowon during Joseon society and succeeded the educational theory of Seowon by Teoigye Yi Hwang, who prepared the foundation of its advancement by defining its character.
