Approaching the problems of collective memories in the public sphere, prior studies usually accepted the model of competing memories. They assumed that politics of memory is a struggle of different collective memories over scarce resources (social recognition or reparation from the state). However, globalization has produced new transnational and transcultural networks of memories that exceed such a framework of zero-sum mnemonic struggle. In this context, there have emerged new attempts in memory studies to illuminate the interconnections of different memories of wars and violence for the sake of new mnemonic solidarity. A link emphasized by new theories of “multidirectional memory” (Michael Rothberg) is that between the memories of the Holocaust and those of decolonization (Algerian War in particular). This study offers a synthetic analysis of recent theories of multidirectional memory and presents the Affaire Maurice Papon (1997-98) as a case study for exemplifying their arguments. In conclusion, I address both possibilities and limits of multidirectional memory theories, and point out their implications for today’s politics of memory and the relationship between history and memory.
