Advertising expenditure has been believed to be a main indicator of business economy. Since 2000, however, the theory has not always proven to be right in that, the economy and advertising expenditure no longer complement. This is because, advertising expenditure, which was considered a non-essential cost, is no longer seen as "cost" in the fierce competitive market arena, but a matter of brand strategy. Thus, companies of the top 10 brands are expanding their advertisement expenditure continuously, regardless of the economies condition and creating a new business cycle in brand awareness and stabilization. Namely, the cycle can be seen as, Increased Brand Name Awareness → Higher Company Value → Increased Revenue and Profit → Higher Advertising Expenditure. These companies embed the essential messages they want delivered to the consumer in advertisements and use this communication method as a means to interrelate with consumers. No longer do companies' advertising expenditure adaptively react to the economy nor do companies expect short-time advertising effects.
This change has advantage in brand value uplift, but may also lead to industry imbalance, leaving only one winner and the rest at loss. In the Korean market, also, one can see several hand picked companies leading the advertising market at enormous strength where lagging companies struggle to catch up.
Results for the top 1000 companies, based on revenue, in their influence of advertising expenditure on revenue, for year 2002 are as follows;
Industry Average of revenue vs advertising expenditure, based on revenue cost ratio is 1.3%. Highest advertisement expenditure industry is in the following order; Cosmetics and health products(5.0%), Beverage and favorite foods(4.7%), Medical and pharmaceutical products(3.6%). However, industrial products show a 0.2% revenue advertising expenditure ratio, being exceptionally lower than industry average.
More advertisement spending is originated by launchings of a new product or service thus creating a public advertising demand. Accordingly, even though companies may be categorized as the same industry, advertising expenditure vary widely based on ones business condition and operations regardless of industry or business average.
In a competitive industry, all competitors show a similar advertising cost model as the leading company of that field. Notably, the trend stands out for the mobile communications and electronics market.
Finally, analyzing the relevance between revenue and advertising expenditure, results show that, current year's advertising expenditure incurs more increased revenue in next year's and the year following than the current year the expense was incurred. Thus advertising expenditure can now be seen not an expense but an investment.
Preparing this paper, my questions for industry advertising expenditure fixation and standards, revenue vs advertisement expenditure ratio within the same industry, similarity of advertisement among competitors, and finally the correlation between revenue and advertising expenditure were answered.
A final point made is that as advertising is becoming more closer to consumers, companies are aiming not for short-term effects but are in for the long run.
