      American sport films have allowed socio-political and cultural discourses, envisioning American society as the land of opportunity in which the protagonist can achieve the American Dream regardless of differences in race, gender, or class. Ironically, however, the capitalist and systematized society, realistically portrayed as an impediment to the protagonist’s success, can also lead to a realization that an individual’s talent and hard work does not guarantee reaching the dream. The contradiction that the American Dream is reinforced as well as devitalized in sport films is obscured due to optimistic conclusions and entertaining effects. Nevertheless, sport films inadvertently reveal that the sporting world is not exempt from the commercialized social system and that the American Dream has been redefined as a cultural commodity, remanufactured and distributed by Hollywood.
      Baseball films are no exception in the ambivalent representation of the dream although baseball has served to mythologize traditional ideals of a unifying society that actually never existed in the past. This paper discusses three recent baseball films, critically acclaimed and commercially successful—The Natural (1984), Bull Durham (1988), and Moneyball (2011)—focusing on the way in which baseball is represented not simply as a national game but also as a business that formulates the American Dream in different shapes from traditional beliefs. In doing so, this paper argues that the American Dream has not been abandoned but rather continues in a compromised form, derived from the American romantic and sentimental notions of baseball.
