As the foreign students who are studying in Korean universities and graduate schools have been increasing, the demand of Korean education focusing on the foreign learners with academic purpose increases also. Especially, high level of Korean proficiency and knowledge related to the major are very necessary for the study in the graduate school. However, many foreign students whose Korean proficiency is not very skillful and still need time to cultivate Korean proficiency and academic ability have been admitted to the universities. Under this current situation, foreign students meet many difficulties in several aspects and concerns about their Korean ability are emerging. On one hand, foreign graduate students need to write many reports and master’s thesis. On the other hand, high wiring ability with good Korean proficiency is essential in finishing the assignments and thesis. Owing to their lack of wiring ability, the foreign graduate students feel very stressful in academic wiring. Accordingly, the writing education for them should not be ignored and it is very necessary to develop related textbooks and curriculum. Therefore, this study is aimed to propose Korean writing textbook development plan for Chinese learners who will study in the department of Korean Language and Literature of for the master degree, by focusing on the report writing and master’s thesis writing according to the major. For this, study was conducted as follows.
First of all, it is divided into the development of writing textbooks with academic purpose for the foreign students and the academic writing education for the foreign graduate students and the academic writing education according to the major related previous studies were reviewed. Afterward, the academic Korean writing education, the principles of Korean textbook development, Korean textbook study and related theoretical background were examined. The content structure of existing academic writing textbooks were investigated. The survey of the demands of the students and professors in the department of Korean Language and Literature of the graduate school were conducted. As for the results, Chinese students wrote the most often demonstration reports and summary reports. The writing types which they need the most were thesis, demonstration reports and summary reports. The writing types which they feel the most difficult were thesis and demonstration reports. In addition, when writing reports and thesis, Chinese students faced difficulties in expressing their thoughts logically, using the expressions accurately in the academic writing, constructing the content relevantly and the writing of previous studies. The standard of textbook analysis was established by referring to the previous studies and textbook analysis was conducted. As for the results, the advantages of the textbooks can be summarized that it helps the students to get familiar with the characteristics of the writing types, with the genres and processes as focus and that contents related to writing of each phase were well presented. However, most of the textbooks leaned too much on the learning contents for foreign undergraduate students and the presentation of contents related to thesis writing for the graduate students was not enough. In addition, the learning contents were not well designed according to the characteristics of the majors. The contents assessing the degree of learning, sufficient text examples were not well presented. Finally, Based on the results of required survey and the analysis of the textbook, the composition principles of writing textbooks were designed. It is divided into “basic” part and “practical” part. The learning contents were selected and the syllabus was made. After setting up the content structure of each unit, the model of the content structure for the demonstration unit which is the most difficult for the learners was proposed.
The implications of this study can be summarized as follows. Firstly, the necessity of the Korean textbook development according to the major by dividing the students into foreign undergraduate students and foreign graduate students, through the analysis of existing Korean academic writing textbooks for the foreign students and the survey on the demands of Chinese students and university professors. Through demand survey, the writing types which Chinese students do not very well or feel difficult in when doing the academic writing in the graduate school, the insufficient ability and parts were examined. The development plans of Korean writing textbooks for the Chinese students who are going to study in the department of Korean Language and Literature were proposed. However, there are also limitations in this study. In the demand survey, the opinions of more many professors and students who’ major in addition to Korean Language Education in the department of Korean Language and Literature were not considered much. The content model only presented contents of one unit. Moreover, the studying effect of the textbook development plan was not practically verified. It is necessary to study these aspects in the future studies.
