In the first half of the 19th century, a new, distinguishing phenomenon emerged in the royal banquets of the Joseon dynasty. While the reformation of music and dance performances in 1828 exemplifies the efforts to strengthen the monarch authority, the gradual change in the use of utensils has also been identified through the royal protocols of the early 19th century. It is particularly noteworthy that the usage of Chinese porcelain expanded from table-utensils to feast hall decorations and it became evident from the banquet in 1848.
Since their first appearance only as part of the newly introduced court dances in 1828, Chinese flower vases, recorded as Danghwajun, were placed in a pair at center stage of the banquet in 1848. Previous studies identified them merely as an eye-catching object of the sumptuous feast and primarily focused on the stylistic analysis of illustrations in the protocols of royal banquets around the time. However, Danghwajun in 1848 requires an in-depth investigation of its usage and style, as this Chinese vase replaced the blue-and-white porcelain jar with dragon design which had long been a symbol of regal authority in the royal ceremonies of the Joseon dynasty.
By scrutinizing relevant accounts in the royal protocols, this paper explores the context surrounding the appearance of Danghwajun as major part of the royal decoration in 1848. Stylistic analysis of the design aims to appreciate its value in the complex ceramic culture of the time. In doing so, this paper illuminates the significance of Danghwajun connoting the attitude of the royal house toward the items for their high-ranking events and further attempts to understand the burgeoning material culture in Joseon during the early 19th century.
