This study begins with the premise that the frequently recurring images of water, mirror, and flowers in Tang poetry require examination not as isolated symbols but as a combined image complex that generates distinctive meaning structures. Whereas previous studies have largely focused on single images or individual motifs, this study foregrounds patterns of image combination in order to illuminate the cognitive frameworks and emotional formations underlying Tang poetic expression. By tracing how these three images interact, the article seeks to offer a more multidimensional understanding of how Tang poets articulated inner experience through external scenery.
The analysis first demonstrates that the combination of water, mirror, and flowers constructs an aesthetic space characterized by the tension between stillness and movement. The mirror signifies static contemplation and inward stillness, water introduces continuous flow and transformation, and flowers visualize temporality through blooming and falling. Second, the study shows how the same image complex is employed to represent female beauty and boudoir lament. Mirrors enable female speakers to confront both beauty and its inevitable decline, water intensifies emotional instability through uncertain reflection, and flowers overlay physical elegance with the brevity of life, thereby idealizing beauty while foregrounding solitude, loss, and longing. Third, the article analyzes how the triadic imagery functions as a mechanism for self-reflection: mirrors prompt comparison between past and present selves, water renders time irreversible and the self unstable, and flowers deepen reflection by evoking aging and mortality.
Finally, the article examines how the interaction of water, mirror, and flowers shapes a peach-blossom spring like transcendental space. Water marks the boundary between reality and an ideal realm, mirrors enhance a sense of unreality through reflective distortion, and flowers convey seasonal order alongside momentary beauty. Together, these images create a space that temporarily suspends worldly suffering and temporal constraints, allowing the poetic subject to experience freedom and tranquility. Yet this transcendence remains fleeting rather than permanent, revealing a persistent tension between the longing for escape and awareness of reality. Through these four parallel dimensions, this study argues that image combination in Tang poetry forms a complex system through which poets connect external observation with emotional depth and existential reflection.
