    In 1996, the number of Korean outbound travelers registered 4,649,251, a growth rate of 21.7 and the expenditure of Korean nationals traveling overseas totaled USA 6,963 million, up 18.0% from the previous year. Consequently, Korea's balance of tourist payments in 1996 fell into the red, recording a deficit of US$ 1,533 million. However, the full liberalization of nationals' overseas travel policy being negatively assessed by the people in terms of enhancing the socio-cultural effects of international tourism. The purpose of this study is to explore the economic and socio-cultural impacts of Korean overseas tourists on Korean residents who engage in tourist businesses in Hawaii, so as to identify positive and negative impacts on the residents. This paper discusses the results of 1992 and 1997 survey of Korean residents engaged in tourist businesses in Hawaii. Korean tourists' expenditures and their economic impacts on the local residents, socio-cultural influences, and the residents' attitudes toward Korean tourists were gathered and are assessed comparatively. Findings of the survey are analysed from the perspective of identifying econimic and socio-culrural impacts of Korean tourists on the residents in Hawaii. Simultaneously, the residents' perception and images of Korean tourists were explored and evaluated. Deficiencies are identifyed and discussed and possible remedial measures highlighted. The impact of Korean tourists in Hawaii was found to be both favorable and unfavorable on the basis of the survey of resident Korean tourist businessmen. The rrst favorable and positive irrpacts were found in the economic effects, and unfavorable factors were in the socio-cultural effects. This paper provides possible solutions and recommendations for improving the situation and for removing the remaining impediment factors between Korean tourists and Korean residents in Hawaii. It is requested that the government authorities in Korea and Hawaii, tourist businessmen and tourists themselves should recognized the importance and effects of international tourism in terms of economical, social, cultural, environmental and political aspects. Consequently, their positive attitudes and efforts in creating better environment for the tourism will not only solve the problems but also develop the international tourism.
