폴 리쾨르의 텍스트 이론을 바탕으로 살펴본 『프로슬로기온』 (Proslogion)의 문학적 형태

Until now, Anselm’s Proslogion has been interpreted as a philosophical or theological text by most philosophers and theologians such as René Descartes, Immanuel Kant, Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Thomas Aquinas, and Karl Barth. Even though their interpretations established their own traditions and dedicated to valuable academic progresses in philosophy and theology, they have neglected an essential part of the Proslogion: the form of the text. Thus, in this article, the literary genre of the Proslogion was analyzed through Robert McMahon’s understanding of ‘medieval meditative ascent,’ which refers to both the journey of the soul to God and a literary genre of the medieval era. For the purpose of more accurate and fruitful analysis of the genre of the Proslogion, McMahon’s ‘medieval meditative ascent was criticized and articulated through Paul Ricoeur’s text theory and religious hermeneutics. As a result, it was revealed that the Proslogion was written in a way of promoting the transformation of the reader through the dialectic of poetic reference and limit expression. Through this dialectic, the reader of the Proslogion is supposed to experience the transition of perspectives of oneself concerning God and the world. In this way, the reader is to have a faith. Thus, from the perspective of its genre, the Proslogion was a de facto religious text which aims at reader’s religious transformation through meditative reading. This literary and practical interpretation of the Proslogion should shed light on the philosophical, theological, and historical interpretations of the past and the present.
