    This paper examined the contextual effects on vowel duration in artificial carrier phrase sentences of Korean and built a model of vowel duration for speech synthesis based on the analysis of 1,054 syllables annotated for their segmental and suprasegmental contexts. The context was encoded as a set of 27 factors for the vowel in question. Through the use of an automated search and error minimization procedure, this paper estimated the parameters of a nine-factor model which explains over 80% of the variance in vowel duration in the speech data. It was found that the manner of surrounding consonants had a more significant effect on the duration of vowels than their place of articulation. The largest lengthening context was when the vowel was in phrase-final position. Some comparisons were carried out between the actual vowel durations and the predicted durations according to the timing model of Korean vowels. The fit with the speech data was quite good.
