The purpose of this thesis is to suggest the representation of diphthongs in Middle Korean. It can be formalized by morification and syllabification in the position of the respect of prosodic licensing principle which is required to be governed by the higher level of prosodic structure.
In morification and syllabification the head must be existed. Put another word one head should be existed in order to be licensed as a prosodic unit by the higher level prosodic units. It is referred to the principle of prosodic head and which is applied to all the level of prosodic structure.
Head mora is represented with the non-head mora differently and then head mora can be unified with the headness feature of the syllable. Thereafter the headness feature of the head mora should be unified with the headness feature of the head segment in order to satisfy the unification principle of prosodic head feature.
The mora template of Middle Korean is supposed to have the empty set bracket. In this case the empty set is able to become the head mora of all segments and the set of head mora feature means the empty set. If we thought that the diphthongs of Middle Korean had two mora then the representation of it was as follows.
