The theory of Metaphor has been maintained up to the 1930's since Aristotle. I.A.Richards redefined metaphor in 1936. He suggested Interaction Theory by establishing 'tenor' and 'vehicle' in a metaphorical sentence.
Metaphor results from the deviances in a language:syntatic, semantic aud pragmatic deviances.
Syntactic deviance comes from the violation of the strict subcategorization rules, semantic deviance from the selection rule, and pragmatic deviance from the maxim of quality.
Intentional deviant expressions are interpreted metaphorically, but unintentional ones are regarded as an error, producing no meaning.
Metaphorical expressions can convey various effects such as tension, surprise and new knowledge to listeners. These can be used effectively in terms of literature.
In the last chapter, what is discussed is the applicability of metaphor to the educational uses. Metaphor can contribute to building up learning effects. The other side of the coin, however, shows that without the logical basis of inferenes and arguments it will be difficult to use metaphor educationally. A further study in this field is required of us.
