Feng-Shui theories have regarded humans as part of nature and houses as artificial spaces so far. Myeongdang residence and graves, ideally constructed according to Feng-Shui geography, have been verified in culture and history, and interest and research have continued with different times and cultures. The modern residence has been completely different from the past houses due to the combination of various cultures. Therefore, it is time for re-interpretation of Feng-Shui and systematic verification to be applicable modern society. However, the papers on practical Feng-Shui in Korea are still relatively insignificant compared to the entire Feng-Shui papers, and they are mainly limited to graves and classic Feng-Shui themes.
In order to study the modern Feng-Shui for housing, it is necessary to study how western researchers use Feng-Shui, which have succeeded in popularization by combining Chinese Feng-Shui theories with Western culture.
The themes of the books of Feng-Shui published in the United States are shown in various fields such as modern architecture, indoor interior, office interior, color, and garden. In addition, verification through Feng-Shui and modern re-interpretation of living environment can be found. We must learn from them reversely our thoughts and how to use Feng-Shui theories in reality that have been overlooked while embracing the Western style of convenient housing culture.
In this paper, four specialized books about Feng-Shui were analyzed based on the published translations in Korea among Western specialized books about Feng-Shui by various experts. Among them, Lillian too's books, which have been active until recently and published in various fields regarding Feng-Shui, were intensively analyzed.
Lillian Too's indoor Feng-Shui interior theory shows appropriate use of both Dongkisataek (東西四宅) and Flying star Feng-Shui theory belonging to Compass School (理氣論). The two English-language books organized in this paper are Feng Shui (1996) and Feng Shui for Interiors (2016). In Feng Shui for Interiors (2016), a significant part of the theory of Lillian too is summarized, which is necessary for Feng-Shui interior for housing.
Therefore, this paper aims to lay the foundation for establishing a Korean Feng-Shui interior theory that fits Korean culture and emotions through an analysis of Lillian too's theory and use of Feng-Shui.
